Kenpo Jutsu

The style of Okinawa Kenpo/Karate at Hillards Defense Arts is at its core a mixed martial art which was built strictly for the life protection of self and others. The foundation of the art lies in the native fighting system of Okinawa known as Tegumi. Tegumi was a form of grappling which later evolved to include essential elements of the surrounding martial arts of Asia and Southeast Asia, acquiring the various striking, locking, and throwing that is present today.  In 1953 Shigero Nakamura officially instituted his version of the art with the intension to unify all styles of Okinawan karate under one name, "Okinawa Kenpo".  In 1969 the system was then passed to Nakamura's student, Seikichi Odo.

Kobujutsu

Kobujutsu at Hillards Defense Arts traces its lineage through Seikichi Odo and his version of Matayoshi Kobudo. The system includes training in the most common Okinawan weaponry such as bo, sai, tunfa, and nunchaku, but also many of the lesser known weapons such as tekko, eku, nunte-bo, kuwa, and kama. Training in the system includes the 27 original weapons kata as passed down by Odo, as well as additional kata incorporated by IKKF President C. Bruce Heilman.  Students will learn application principles and offensive/defensive methods inherent in the use of the individual weapons.
